                   An Ounce of Prevention

Along with the many aspects of prevention
addressed in "The Breast Stays Put"
the following is also a smattering

can put in place
in their
life.

As a side note:  Women who have their estrogen levels tested who consume a lot of soy, as in soy milk, tofu, etc. typically have elevated estrogen levels-and sometimes they are off the charts.

Canola Oil is made from "rape seed" and is a toxin
to the system.  It's been put into use in this country because of economics.  Choose olive, coconut, grapeseed, seasame, flaxseed whenever possible.

CT Scans - Beware

This page is about exactly what is says it is:
An Ounce of Prevention.
An "ounce" because of the vastness of the subject.

CT Scan

I remember the night Sheperd Smith reported on FOX News that CT Scans cause cancer.  I thought  at first that I didn't hear him right.  But they came back from a break and he went on to explain that they have now proven that the very test they use to determine if someone has cancer actually causes it.   One person in one thousand will get cancer down the road because of them.  "That means," he said, "of the  millions of CT scans given this past year, thousands will be diagnosed with cancer in years to come because it."

I still could hardly believe it, so I went online and did a search.  And I found an article from September 4th of 2004!  If I'd heard that segment on CBS I would have never had a second chest CT scan in April of '05!  But this was the first I heard of it.  I quote from the article:

. . . since whole-body CT scans to screen for disease are becoming more and more accessible to American consumers without the need for a doctor's referral or prescription, The Early Show medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay
reports there is a concern that the radiation may cause cancer if it's used on a regular basis without good reason.
A new study in the journal Radiology points out that the radiation from a full-body CT scan may actually raise the risk of cancer as it's trying to detect it. They looked at people who were exposed to radiation from atomic bombs in Japan during World War II in amounts equivalent to a full-body CT scan.
They estimate that one full-body CT scan at the age of 45 increases the risk of cancer by one in 1200. Not a huge risk. But if that same person gets the same scan every year until age 75, the risk of cancer goes up to one in 50. That's a big risk.

How crazy is that!  And did you catch that in the first paragraph? (It always intrigues me how they "qualify" and "rationalize" procedures and drugs that are known to cause harm by making these kinds of statements.)

" . . .  there is a concern that the radiation may cause cancer if it's used on a regular basis without good reason.

(Like if it's being used for a "good reason" -- oh well then it's okay!  Because  if' it's being used for a GOOD reason  -- well then, in that case it won't  cause cancer?  Please!  If that isn't what she meant to say -- what DID she mean to say?  (I think she meant to say it.  I think she was TOLD to say it.  But that's just me.)

I would think that if someone absolutely had to have a CT scan becaue of finding themselves in a life or death situation, and the information a CT scan provides could help make a difference in choices that were being made that could affect the long term prognosis for the patient, well, then I can see where that would be different.  But let's not forget that there are MRI's, thermography, PET Scans, and tumor marker and other blood tests that can determine if someone's situation is improving or deteriorating.

Of all diagnostic testing, I had thought the PET scan would be the "problematic" one.  With a PET scan they inject you with a type of "radioactive sugar".  Cancer cells gobble up the sugar (they feed on glucose) and causing them to "glow" and they can then be detected.  And even PET scans don't tell the whole story at times, just like CT scans do not either.  But with a PET scan, from what I understand the radiation is such that it dissipates over time, as opposed to the radiation a patient is exposed to through a CT scan being equivalent to that of 200 X-rays--and obviously cumulative.

So there is now a "slash" through "CT scans" on my list of "Diagnostics I Would Agree To".   You can read the rest of the articles and view the two taped segments of "The Early Show" on CBS by clicking below.  I wasn't in Nagasaki to get the radiation then, so I won't be opting for anymore of it either by having another one of these tests!   Just another reason to do a maintenance bottle of Protocel yearly.

Surviving the Doctor Visit

Of the numerous directions we can go on the subject of "prevention", when I think about what could be the ONE thing that could be done in the way of prevention that could keep people healthy and, in some cases, spare them from years of pain, misery and even  catastrophic reversal in their health -- the first thing that comes to mind is to equip them with a "survival kit" for dealing with doctors and the medical profession as a whole, or advise them to stay as far away from those people as possible.  Being involved and health and nutrition my entire adult life, when I consider the conversations I've had, and the stories I've been told since authoring "The Breast Stays Put" and becoming more deeply involved in the world alternative therapies and treatments, I'm convinced of it more than ever-people have to be on their toes before they go to a doctor.  Unless you go in informed and armed with empowerment about where you want your doctor/patient relationship to go, doctor visits can at times be very "hazardous" to your health!

For those of you who have no idea what I'm speaking of, consider yourself fortunate.
One visit with the wrong doctor can send a perfectly healthy, normal vibrant life down a road that leads to the loss of everything they had the day they first stepped into that doctor's office.  And Cali's story in "The Breast Stays Put" is a perfect example of it.  Cali could have been "the poster-girl" for wishing she'd known some of this before her "fateful" doctor-visit thirty years ago.  And just ask Marie, on our testimonials page, (Marie's Story) about her "cold-hearted" surgeon who took it upon herself to do 5 biopsies on one tumor (that they could skipped the procedure completely if they'd just lab report from the fluid oozed out of her breast as it was compressed during the mammogram!)  Finding the right doctor, can make all the difference in the world.  The right doctor can dispel fears and make you feel you are a part of a team, instead of someone who has no right to an opinion when it comes to making decisions that will ultimately affect the course of their lives for years to come.

But a lot of times, you don't really know until you are way to far into an appointment or procedure that you weren't at all prepared for what was coming--what was going to be perpetrated on your.  It's an assembly line out there, people.  Now more-so than ever.   They are there  waiting -- with their "cookie-cutter" "one-size-fits-all" "there's only one way  to go about this'' set-up and mind-set.  And we're supposed to sit there like a lump of dough to be flattened by their rolling pin mannerisms, attitudes and ideas of treatment.

You try to explain what's really happening to you, and to your body-and voice your concerns.  And you try to get it out as quickly as possible, because you can tell by the look on his face, his body language, and what he's saying and not saying, that you're about to be cut off . . . because he(she) is a very busy professional.  You've sat in the waiting room for over an hour past your appointment, but the doctor doesn't have 15 or 20 minutes to let you tell him about yourself as a whole.  And he doesn't want to hear it.  Because in his mind, he's there to treat whatever "part" of you he thinks needs fixing, and he really doesn't care about the rest of your body or what you think is connected throughout it that is causing the problem.

(And yet  -- not to worry -- there actually are great doctors and there are also answers to this dilemma!  And we have the ability to make even the "not so great" experiences with them even better, and more importantly, safer.  There is a "survival secret" you can carry into a doctors office with you  .  .  . it doesn't cost a thing, and it can be the "acid test" for your peace of mind when sorting the good ones out from the "not so hot" -- at least not hot enough that you'd want to put your life in their hands.
     It's called:

The Art of Asking Questions

Even if you're not a "take charge" kind of person, and you really don't have it in you to stand up to a doctor, anyone, regardless of how timid or mild-mannered their personality, can glance down at a pad of paper and ask their doctor, "Is it okay if I ask you a few questions that I have concerns about?"  And if the doctor says, "As long as you're quick -- I don't have much time--I have other patients . . . " -- well, you were looking for a doctor when you walked in that door.  You can be looking for another one when you walk out it.
But there's a way to make a judgment call before ever entering a doctor's office and paying for a visit.  Make a phone call, or pay a visit to the office.  Ask one of his/her assistants if the doctor is familiar with alternative therapies and if the doctor
